Endocarditis is an infection that affects the heart. The authors’ conclusion that this was caused by electrolysis is not shared by all physicians. Richards (1991) writes, "We do not believe this report establishes any causal relationship whatsoever between electrolysis and endocarditis in the young woman" (p. R88).
