Home laser hair removal

One of the most common questions I get is about laser hair removal for use at home.

First and foremost, almost every “home laser” should be avoided. Most do not work as claimed, and some are about as effective as the laser scanner at your local supermarket. Only use a device that has been cleared by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Even those cleared are not as powerful as lasers used at clinics and medspas. Home use lasers generally do not work as well as promised. I do not recommend home use lasers for the following groups:

  • People with dark skin tones
  • People wanting to treat blonde, red, gray, or white hair
  • Men wanting to remove facial hair
  • Transgender adults wanting to remove facial hair
  • People who want to remove their own back or buttock hair
  • People who want to remove coarse pubic hair
  • People who want to remove eyebrow or ear hair
  • People who want to remove hair on their genitals (scrotum, labia etc.)
